DARJEELING,: Hamro Party president Ajoy Edwards has stated that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has assured to support the 6th Schedule status demand for Darjeeling region.

Edwards had met AAP leader Rajesh Sharma at the party’s head office in New Delhi. Sharma is the APP in-charge for North Eastern States.

At the meeting, the Hamro Party delegation expressed solidarity and support towards AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who was released today after 40-day judicial custody.

“The Gorkhas of Darjeeling have been demanding the status of 6th Schedule to be implemented in their area. In the year 2007 the bill was also introduced in the parliament but due to different reasons it was not passed during that time. To make this demand a reality Sharma has assured that AAP will provide their support to it,” said Edwards in a press release.

The Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) for the implementation of the 6th Schedule had also been signed between the State, Centre and the GNLF on 6th December 2005. However, with many political parties here raising their voice against the issue, the bill which was introduced in 2007 could not be passed in the Lok Sabha.

Instead with the formation of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha party, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration was formed here as the administrative body.

Apart from meeting Sharma, Edwards also submitted a letter addressed to Kejriwal expressing his support towards him and his “fight against injustice”.

Commending the “exemplary work” being done by Kejriwal in Delhi, Edwards in his letter said, “As the President of Hamro Party, a proud member of the INDIA Alliance, I have closely followed the remarkable progress you have achieved in various sectors, which has served as an inspiration to me and many others across the nation. In these challenging times, as an alliance partner of the INDIA Alliance, HP stands firmly in solidarity with you, advocating for justice and fairness.”
