GANGTOK,: Darjeeling MP Raju Bista on Monday shared that the financial bid
for the civil construction work of a new terminal building at Bagdogra airport
has been approved. With this, almost all the formalities towards the
construction of the new terminal building have been completed, he said.
“Bagdogra
is the busiest airport in our region, and will now have the much needed
infrastructure to handle both the domestic and international passenger load.
The current terminal has a built-up area of only around 8,000 sq.m and was
designed to handle 400 passengers per hour.”
“The new
terminal, when completed will have a 1 lakh sq.mtrs, with 50,000 sq.mtrs being
constructed in Phase 1, and will have the capacity to handle 3800 passengers
per hour,” said the Darjeeling MP.
It was
informed that the new terminal will be equipped with a multi-level car park, 10
aerobridges, 6 will be constructed in Phase 1, and its apron will allow 16
narrow-body aircrafts (eg. A320, B737) to be parked together. Once construction
begins, the work is expected to be completed in the next 2.5 years.
“The new
terminal will allow for the upgradation of Bagdogra to an international
airport, which will bring immense growth in international tourism, travel,
trade, commerce and also competitive flight prices. This will immensely benefit
our Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars and the adjacent regions,” said Bista.
