GANGTOK, : A meeting to discuss the
protection of SirijungaWadham, a sacred site in West Sikkim, was held on Sunday
under the chairmanship of LokSabha MP Indra Hang Subba at
LimbooBhawan, DPH Area here. The agenda of the meeting was to explore measures
to either protect the site from the encroachment of a highway passing through
it or consider the possibility of realigning the road to ensure the Wadham's
preservation, informs a press release.
The meeting was attended by the Roads and Bridges
secretary, National Highway chief engineer, Sikkim YakthungSapsokSongchumbo
(SYSS) vice president and other SYSS members, and LalitLimboo, treasurer,SirijungaManghim
Management Committee, Martam.
Indra Hang emphasized the government’s serious
commitment to the protection of SirijungaWadham, a site of immense cultural and
religious importance to the local community. He expressed his gratitude towards
Chief Minister P.S. Golay for his relentless efforts to address the concerns
regarding the preservation of the sacred site.
The Roads & Bridges secretary discussed various
possibilities to protect the Wadham site from the road passing through.
The LokSabhaMP assured the participants that he would approach
the government for further action. Additionally, he committed to exploring the
involvement of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for potential
recognition of SirijungaWadham as a heritage site.
Indra Hang further suggested organizing conventions
and seminars to educate the public about the historical and cultural
significance of SirijungaWadham.
It was decided in the meeting that the road alignment shall
not interfere with the sacred site at any cost. The participants also decided
that detailed plans for the road project should be prepared with careful
consideration to the Wadham's preservation, the release adds.
