Passing away of Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92 years, late at night on 26th December is an irreparable loss to the nation.A noble soul, father of liberalization, an economist & reformer par excellance, he was being treated at AIIMS for age related illnesses after he had become unconscious at home.He is survived by his wife and three daughters-Upinder, Daman and Amrit.
Humble Beginnings
Rising from humble village level origins, he did his Graduation from Punjab University, followed by a degree in Economics from Cambridge University. He also secured a D.Phil. degree from Oxford University. One of his distinctions was to teach at Delhi School of Economics. By his avid and diligent works, he succeeded in ensuring the country to get rid of years of tepid growth and substantial deficit. Inspector Raj was got rid of and India could open up to the world, at last.He felt that public sector in India should be an engine of growth rather than an absorber of national savings.
A Reluctant Politician
Although he was honourably invited by P.V. Narasimha Rao to be the Finance Minister in 1991 and 'pushed' into the coveted chair of Prime Minister in 2004 by the Prima Donna of Congress party, yet he could survive and thrive despite not getting involved into the nuances of politics.Known for his humility, he wore many hats during his long and distinguished career.
Here was a Sikh who saw bloodshed of partition, rose from nothing to head the largest democracy of the world for a decade.
Played Many Roles
He had the capability to withstand the currents of turbulent waters of Indian politics despite his simplicity, sincerety and high integrity on the one hand and his vast administrative experiences as Chief Economic Advisor, Finance Secretary and Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, on the other. He was also a dynamic Secretary General of the South Commission.
Pakistan
Village Background
A noble soul, an extraordinary economist, and a reformer, he would inspire many Indians, especially from weaker sections, who possessed requisite education but owing to lack of resources and timely guidance, did not have means and access to the positions they desired. He himself was born in a backward village of Pakistan, which neither had drinking water & electricity supply nor any health centre. He had to walk a long distance to school. At night, he had to study under the dim light of a Kerosene oil lamp. But he was determined to achieve his goal.
Commanded Respect
Clad in his trade mark sky blue turban and white tunic ,he would command respect from all.Though he was not a publicist, he was respected even by his opponents and leaders in India and all over the world for his knowledge, virtues and knack NOT to get involved in connivance and controversies.Wherever he was, sincerity and diligence were his hallmarks.
Initiatives In Citizen's Interest
Life has become rather simple and uncomplicated for Indian consumer due to liberalisation drive he fathered in 1991.However, these were also supported point blank by his shrwed leader. So part credit should be due to the latter also.Dr Singh was also responsible for enactment of Right to Information & Right to food to citizens Acts and for launch of long lasting MNREGA, which boosted rural wages.
It was the largest demand driven employment programme in the world.Dr.Singh also received global praise for his efficient handling of 2008 global financial crisis. He ensured state led transformation to a market oriented one without major disruptions.
