DARJEELING,: The Nepali New Year was celebrated across the Hills on Monday with vibrant festivities, the highlight being a spectacular performance featuring 1,008 madals played simultaneously in Kalimpong town.

Rallies filled with people in traditional attire and accompanied by the sounds of indigenous musical instruments were seen in various parts of the region, marking the joyous occasion.

Speaking about the unique madal event, Sudhir Ghaley, a member of the Gorkha Gaurav Sansthan (GGS), said, "Apart from being a part of the New Year celebration, we also wanted to pay homage to Padma Shri awardee, the late Kazi Singh, who played a major role in preserving this musical instrument in the Hills."

Adding to this, GGS founding member Narendra Tamang stated, "There was a previous record of 555 madals being played at once, and we wanted to break that record by inviting 1,008 people to join in."

The Kalimpong program was an initiative of the GGS and included a cultural rally showcasing the rich heritage of the people. Female musicians playing the traditional Naumati instrument led the rally, followed by the grand madal performance at Mela Ground. The performance was led by the Madal Sangrakshan Samity, with participants from diverse backgrounds as well as leaders and members of various political parties.

"Our main goal in organizing this program on Nepali New Year is to preserve and promote Gorkha tradition and culture. We believe it's important for the youth to stay connected to their roots," said Tamang.

Meanwhile, in Darjeeling, a shobha yatra was held in the heart of town. Organized by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration's Information and Cultural department, the rally saw participation from various organizations and communities. The event showcased Gorkha heritage through traditional attire, musical instruments, and dance. A cultural program was also held at Chowrasta to conclude the celebration.
