One Model School at a Time

In a landmark move that sets a new benchmark for public education in Sikkim, Chief Minister P.S. Golay inaugurated the Chief Minister’s Model School (CMMS) at Assam Lingzay under Pakyong district on Thursday. This initiative is more than just a new building—it’s a bold statement of intent to revolutionize the state’s educational landscape and provide high-quality learning opportunities to deserving students.

The CMMS stands out as the first government-run institution in the state where meritorious students are offered a completely free and residential education. Every aspect—from uniforms and lodging to food and academic materials—is covered by the government, ensuring that financial constraints never obstruct a student’s right to dream and achieve. The current batch of 59 students (32 girls and 27 boys), selected through a rigorous three-phase examination process, reflects a commendable focus on merit, inclusivity, and gender balance.

Equipped with modern facilities and led by highly trained educators, the school offers more than traditional learning. It is designed to cultivate critical thinking, life skills, and leadership qualities—elements often neglected in conventional education systems. These first 40 days of operation have already shown tangible results, with notable improvements in students’ academic performance and enthusiasm for learning.

Until recently, the state government had to send its brightest students to private schools. With the launch of CMMS under the Chief Minister Meritorious Scholarship Scheme 2025, this dependency has been boldly reversed. Now, Sikkim can proudly claim that its own government schools are rising to match, if not surpass, the standards of private institutions.

This achievement is the outcome of nearly six years of committed effort by the Education Department to address systemic shortcomings. The CMMS model showcases what is possible when there is political will, visionary leadership, and administrative commitment to reform. More than a school, CMMS represents a shift in the way public education is perceived and delivered. It places dignity, opportunity, and ambition within the reach of every deserving student, regardless of their socio-economic background.

In a time when many public schools across India struggle with poor infrastructure and declining trust, Sikkim’s model school offers a refreshing narrative—one that others would do well to emulate. This initiative deserves wholehearted applause—not only for its intent but also for its timely execution. It brings hope that the future leaders of Sikkim will rise from institutions that are rooted in equity, excellence, and empowerment.
