MIRIK, : The Samadhi of late
Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) leader SubashGhisingh and his wife
DhanKumariSubbaGhisingh was laid Wednesday at Manju in Mirik, his birthplace.
The
memorial, which houses the ashes of Ghisingh and his wife
along with some of their favourite belongings, has been built at Manju Park, a
site developed during Ghisingh’s tenure.
Although
Ghisingh was the president of GNLF, the Samadhi was constructed by the
apolitical Gorkha Pita AtulyaSubashGhisingh Samadhi NirmanSamity with land
inside the park provided by Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
The
event saw not only GNLF supporters but also leaders from various political
parties gathering to pay homage to the late leader.
Y.
Lama, convenor of the Samiti, stated, “This Samadhi was built entirely from
donations collected from GNLF supporters. However, the Samiti remains
apolitical, as Ghisingh was a leader for all Gorkhas.”
Speaking
at the event, GNLF president Mann Ghisingh, son of SubashGhisingh, expressed
gratitude to those who attended. “Today, we not only laid my father’s Samadhi
but also renamed the park as SubashGhisinghSmriti Park on his death
anniversary. We invited everyone, and I am grateful for their presence in
honoring my father,” he said. He also urged the GTA and the state government to
take up the beautification of the park.
BharatiyaGorkhaPrajatantrikMorcha
president and GTA chief AnitThapa also attended the event. “It was Mann Ghisingh’s
wish to build a Samadhi for his father, and it has now been fulfilled. They
sought permission to use land inside the park, which we granted, and they took
full responsibility for its construction,” Thapa said.
Former
CPI(M) MLA from Siliguri, Ashok Bhattacharya, reflected on his long association
with SubashGhisingh, stating, “I worked alongside SubashGhisingh for over 30
years on various issues. He can be regarded as the father of the Gorkhas, as he
brought a new dawn to the Hills. He also served as a symbol of unity between
the hills and the plains.”
