Sikkim secures financial grant for climate-change urban infra development

GANGTOK, : The Urban Development Department (UDD) of Sikkim government participated in the 12thRegional and Circular Economy Forum in the Asia and Pacific, held at Jaipur.

A press release informs that the 12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum aimed to discuss strategic policy inputs and share best practices for mainstreaming 3R and circularity in the Asia-Pacific region. The event also marked a significant milestone with the signing of the tripartite agreement for the CITIIS 2.0 Challenge, where Sikkim successfully secured a Rs. 5 crore challenge fund along with technical assistance in Component 2: Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.

The CITIIS (City Investments to Innovate, Integrate, and Sustain) 2.0 Challenge is a key initiative under the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission, organized by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).

The UDD delegation was led by Jitendra Singh Raje, commissioner-cum-secretary, along with Yogeeta Rai, PCA-cum-secretary, Tshering Doma Bhutia, councillor- Mangan ULB, Jigmee Wangchuk Bhutia, additional secretary and Niranjan Kapil, urban planner.

“Sikkim's proposal stood out for its forward-thinking approach to climate change mitigation while preserving the State’s unique environmental and cultural heritage. The Rs. 5 crore grant and technical assistance will be utilized to develop climate-smart urban infrastructure and implement green initiatives across Sikkims urban centers, ensuring sustainable and resilient urban development,” the UDD release states.
