All-women police mobile patrolling squad launched in Darjeeling

DARJEELING,: At a time when protests are being organized in different parts of Bengal over the rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar hospital, an all-women police mobile patrolling squad was flagged off from Dali Police Line here today.

The “pink patrol van” is part of the safety measures for women initiated by the West Bengal government in different parts of the State through the police.

North Bengal IG Rajesh Kumar Yadav said, “The mobile van unit will consist of female police personnel and is mainly being done for the safety and security of the women folk. They will mostly concentrate their patrolling in areas like women college and hostels where complaints of eve teasing, and harassment are often made.”

Yadav said that such initiatives are being taken in different places. “At present similar pink patrols have already been started in the districts of Coochbehar and Kalimpong. This is being done phase wise and we will take similar initiatives in rural areas also in the days to come. Apart from that, we have also increased security for the women in places like hospitals and have also installed CCTV cameras in different places,” he said.
