DARJEELING,: The Darjeeling Melo Tea Fest
which commenced on Thursday has brought a fresh focus to rural tourism through
its village cultural tourism circuit.
Along
with the fest at Chowrasta here, an event, themed “Gorkhey Village,” was
launched at Dhotrey, a serene forest village 20 km from Darjeeling, as part of
a broader initiative to showcase the traditions and culture of rural
communities while promoting sustainable tourism. The village located in Rimbick-Lodhama
constituency boasts about 80 households and is known for its organic practices
and untouched natural beauty.
The
village was also recognised as the cleanest tourism village by the Gorkhaland
Territorial Administration.
Speaking
at the event, GTA Tourism Sabhasad Norden Sherpa said, “We aim to revive
tourism in the Hills by focusing on authentic experiences rather than
commercial ventures. Dhotrey has been certified as the cleanest village and we
hope it serves as a model for other rural areas. Visitors can enjoy traditional
cuisine, cultural performances and breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga here.”
Sherpa
emphasized the importance of preserving local traditions. “Many homestays have
turned into hotels, which has impacted the tourist experience. The GTA is
encouraging homestays to retain their cultural essence. Programs like guide
training are also being introduced to ensure tourists have enriching
experiences.”
The
festival’s focus on rural tourism has resonated with visitors.
Soumulya,
a tourist from Kolkata, shared her experience, saying, “We were delighted to
discover this festival at Dhotrey. The cultural dances and traditional cuisines
were a treat, and the village’s charm is truly captivating.”
The
Darjeeling Melo Tea Fest is a collaborative effort between the GTA and
Darjeeling Police. It features three unique tourism circuits. The adventure
circuit offers paragliding, river rafting, rock climbing, trekking and hiking,
the bird watching circuit target bird enthusiasts in areas like Latpanchar,
Singalila and Sittong, while the village cultural tourism circuit is aimed at
promoting rural traditions and culture.
Musical
programs and competitions at Chowrasta have further enlivened the festival,
drawing locals and tourists alike.
