DARJEELING,: West Bengal Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee distributed toys and chocolates to children at Chowrasta today
on the occasion of Children’s Day.
Before
leaving Darjeeling around 3 pm, the Chief Minister took her regular morning
walk. From Richmond Hill, where she was staying, Mamata walked towards Padmaja
Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP) and then to Chowrasta via Mall Road.
At
Chowrasta, where a Children’s Day programme was jointly organized by the
district administration, Darjeeling Child Protection Unit and Information and
Cultural department, Mamata was seen interacting with the children. She also
took photographs with them and distributed stuffed toys and chocolates to the
children present.
After
spending some time there, the Chief Minister headed for Richmond Hill via the Mall
Road where she stood for some time listening to school children playing a
Nepali song on their guitar near a viewpoint there.
Following
that, she visited Café House at Mall Road, for the second time during this
visit of her, where she had tea and momo.
During
her walk, she also met Bharati Tamang, the wife of slain Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha
league leader Madan Tamang, below Richmond Hill. She had come there with her
son to meet Mamata. Though, the reason behind her approaching the Bengal CM
could not be ascertained but Bharati has been demanding justice for the murder
of her husband for some time now. The ABGL leader was killed in a broad
daylight on May 21, 2010 at the Upper Clubside area in Darjeeling while
overseeing preparations for a public meeting. Many senior leaders have been
named in the charge sheet filed by the CBI for the murder case with many accused
to be involved in it. Bharati could not be contacted for comments.
Mamata
was also greeted by Mirik Municipality chairman L.B. Rai near Gorkha Ranga
Manch where he offered her a khada. Rai is a leader of the TMC (Hills).
