NAMCHI, : A case of mushroom poisoning
in Namchi district has claimed the life of 34-year-old Man Rani Limboo, also
known as Amirool Limboo, a resident of Daragaon, Lower Kamrang Ward under
Kamrang GPU. The incident occurred during her visit to care for her ailing mother
in Namchi district.
According to her family, Man
Rani had picked wild mushrooms growing near the house and prepared them for
dinner on April 22. Following the meal, she and three other family members, her
brother Man Bahadur Limboo, sister-in-law Bina Maya Rai and niece Lidya Limboo,
began exhibiting symptoms of poisoning. They were taken to Namchi district
hospital, where they initially received basic treatment and were discharged the
same night.
However, as their conditions
deteriorated the following day, the family returned to the hospital on the
evening of April 23. Despite medical intervention, Man Rani succumbed to the
poisoning at around 2 am on April 24. The remaining three were referred to STNM
Hospital in Gangtok, where they were first placed in the ICU and later shifted
to general care.
Namchi Police, in their initial
findings, reported no signs of foul play. A police report cites Amirool's own
statement, given before her death, confirming that she collected and cooked the
mushrooms herself. Nevertheless, Lower Kamrang ward panchayat Bhim Kumar Rai
filed an FIR at Namchi Police Station to initiate a formal investigation.
Police are currently seeking forensic identification of the mushrooms, pending
the recovery of the surviving family members.
Meanwhile, the Namchi district
administration has issued a show cause notice to Namchi district hospital
regarding the initial discharge of the patients.
