GANGTOK: Northeast United FC has reached the final of the 40th
Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament being played here at Paljor Stadium.
The
Shillong-based club overcame a strong Gokulam FC Kerala 2-0 in the semi-final
played under floodlights on Wednesday evening. Both goals came in the second
half.
D. Gangte gave
the lead to Northeast United with a smart flick to a corner ball kick in the 58th
minute.
Gokulam FC made
several attempts to find an equalizer but were thwarted by some excellent
goalkeeping from Northeast United goalie Arman Tamang.
The win for
Northeast United was secured when substitute Mohammad Zahan headed the second
goal in added time.
Goalkeeper
Arman Tamang was declared the Man of the Match.
Northeast
United FC has played some wonderful football in its run-up to the final and has
emerged as a crowd favourite. They defeated Mizoram club Khawzawl Vengthar FC
3-1 in the pre-quarters and drubbed Royal FC Dubai 6-1 in the quarterfinal
match.
The second
semi-final match will be played on Thursday evening between local club Gangtok
Himalayan SC and Chennaiyin FC.
