Chennaiyin FC stuns Nepal club to reach semis

GANGTOK,: The young colts of Chennaiyin FC stunned tournament favourites Church Boys United, Nepal 1-0 to clinch a semi-final berth in the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup here at Paljor Stadium.

Vishal R scored the all-important goal in the 86th minute to secure the hard-fought victory for the Chennai team. He was declared the ‘Man of the Match’ in the game played under floodlights.

The quarterfinal witnessed a massive turnout of spectators, most of them in support of the Nepal club. However, the Church Boys United could not find a way past the speedy and tenacious players of Chennaiyin FC.

With their loss, all the four foreign clubs who were given the direct quarterfinal berth have exited the tournament.

Chennaiyin FC now takes on local club Gangtok Himalayan SC in the second semi-final on November 21.

The first semi-final will be played Wednesday evening under floodlights between Northeast United FC and Gokulam FC, Kerala.
