GANGTOK, : In a bid to nurture cricketing
talent and promote the sport among the youth, Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA)
has launched an outreach program targeting schools across the State.
On Friday, SICA coach
SonamPaldenBhutia along with senior men’s team player NileshLamichaney visited
Modern Senior Secondary School in Gangtok where they conducted a workshop on
“cricket as a career.”
The session, led by Bhutia,
aimed to enlighten students about the various pathways in professional cricket,
covering both on-field opportunities and off-field roles such as coaching,
umpiring and sports management. He also shared insights into training
methodologies, importance of discipline and the dedication required to excel in
the sport.
“In States like Sikkim, where
football has traditionally been the dominant sport, it’s essential to introduce
cricket at the grassroots level,” Bhutia emphasized. “Our goal is to showcase
the growth of cricket in Sikkim and encourage more youngsters to pick up the
bat and ball.”
The workshop witnessed
enthusiastic participation from of students from the school, who engaged in
interactive sessions and posed questions about pursuing cricket professionally.
Bhutia also highlighted SICA’s ongoing efforts to develop cricket
infrastructure and provide platforms for budding players to showcase their
talent.
Bhutia also mentioned Sikkim’s
historic victory in Vijay Hazare Trophy against Rajasthan. On January 5, Sikkim
secured a remarkable 6-run win over Rajasthan, their first-ever triumph against
a top-tier team in the tournament. This victory has not only elevated Sikkim’s
status in the national cricket arena but also served as an inspiration for
aspiring cricketers in the State.
Reflecting on this achievement,
Bhutia stated, “The win against Rajasthan was a testament to the hard work and
determination of our players. It proves that with the right guidance and
perseverance, our local talent can compete at the highest levels.”
The outreach program is part of
SICA’s broader agenda to promote cricket throughout Sikkim. By visiting schools
and conducting such workshops, SICA aims to identify and nurture young talent,
providing them with the necessary resources and training to pursue cricket as a
viable career option.
“With initiatives like these,
SICA hopes to lay a strong foundation for cricket in Sikkim, ensuring that the
state’s budding cricketers receive ample opportunities to shine on both
national and international stages,” said Bhutia.
