GANGTOK, : Sikkim has been awarded a Rs. 5 crore grant along with technical assistance under ‘Component 2: Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation of the Cities 2.0 Challenge’ organized by National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
CITIIS, or City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain, is a sub-component of the Government of India's Smart Cities Mission. The Cities 2.0 Challenge recognizes innovative and scalable urban development solutions addressing climate resilience and sustainability.
Sikkim's proposal stood out for its forward-thinking approach to mitigating climate change impacts while preserving the unique environmental and cultural heritage of the State, informs a press release.
The grant and technical support will focus on developing climate-smart urban infrastructure and implementing green initiatives in Sikkim's urban centers.
Urban Development commissioner-cum-secretary Jitendra Singh Raje expressing delight over the recognition, stated, "This award is a testimony to our commitment to combating climate change and ensuring sustainable development for future generations. With NIUA's support, we aim to lead by example in integrating climate resilience into urban planning."
