Akshay Sachdeva appointed new DGP of Sikkim

GANGTOK: The Sikkim government on Saturday appointed Akshay Sachdeva as the new Director General of Police (DGP). Sachdeva, who previously served as the Special Director General of Police (Law & Order), will succeed A.K. Singh.

“Heartiest congratulations to Shri Akshay Sachdeva, IPS, on his promotion as the Director General of Police, Sikkim,” wrote Chief Minister P.S. Golay on Facebook. “His dedication to public service inspires confidence in his ability to lead Sikkim toward greater progress and excellence. I extend my best wishes for his tremendous success in this important role.”

The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to the outgoing DGP A.K. Singh. “I also take this opportunity to express my heartiest gratitude to the outgoing DGP, Shri A.K. Singh, IPS, for his outstanding and dedicated service. His invaluable contributions to the welfare of Sikkim will always be remembered. I wish him a happy, healthy, and fulfilling retired life,” the Golay added.

The Department of Personnel issued an order appointing Sachdeva as the new DGP on Saturday, a day after the Chief Minister's public announcement of the decision during an event in Pakyong.

Akshay Sachdeva, a 1991-batch IPS officer, began his career in Sikkim as the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Namchi. He later served as SDPO in Rangpo and Gangtok before being promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the erstwhile East Sikkim district. Over the years, Sachdeva held different positions including Sikkim Armed Police commandant, East Sikkim SP, DIG (Range), IGP (Fire), IGP (Law & Order), ADGP (Vigilance and Special Branch) and SDGP (Law & Order).

Sachdeva, a gold medallist in Civil Engineering (BE) and Structural Engineering (ME), has received several prestigious awards including Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2007) and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2023).
