GYALSHING, (IPR): The Bhum Chu festival was celebrated with much enthusiasm at Tashiding monastery under Gyalshing district today.
The holy ceremony was held under the supervision of Khenchen Lha Tshering Rinpoche of Tashiding monastery accompanied by Ecclesiastical minister and Sangha MLA Sonam Lama, deputy Speaker and area MLA Sangay Lepcha, Ecclesiastical department advisor R.S. Bhutia, Gyalshing DC M Bharani Kumaar, officers from line departments, and devotees.
As informed, the Bhum Chu, a sacred vase containing the sacred water was opened at 1:30 am after seven days of special prayers by monks of Tashiding monastery and other monasteries as well. Three cups of water was taken from it. The first cup is for the royal family, the second for the monks and the third was distributed among the pilgrims on the day of the fuIl moon.
It is believed that the holy water level in the vase is a sign of fortune for the upcoming year. Higher or lower levels of water indicate drought, disease and natural calamities.
The festival also draws its light on Sikkim’s unique cultural heritage and a reminder of its spiritual origins.
On record, more than 18 to 20 thousand devotees from across the State and neighbouring countries of Bhutan, Nepal and other places made their presence for the blessings.
Addressing the gathering, the minister thanked the monks and the organising committee for their active participation and successfully conducting the Bhum Chu festival. He informed that the State government will provide special grants for holding Bhum Chu festival every year.
During the ceremony, medical camp, information centre and other facilities were set up for the convenience of the devotees.
