GANGTOK, : TheSikkim BJP celebrated the 'Samman Abhiyan' in honour of Dr. BR
Ambedkar—Father of the Indian Constitution and Bharat Ratna—at the BJP Sikkim
City Office here on Tuesday.
The
event was graced by BJP National SC Morcha executive member Prakash Tanwar,
along with co-convenor and GMC councillor Bidhya Cintury, BJP Sikkim spokesperson
Passang Sherpa, BJP Gangtok district president Pempo D. Lepcha, and other party
executives, members, and local dignitaries.
Addressing
the media, Prakash Tanwar highlighted Dr. Ambedkar's enduring legacy as an
Indian jurist, economist, social reformer, and political leader who chaired the
drafting committee of the Indian Constitution.
Tanwar
criticized the Congress party, stating that despite governing the country for
nearly 70 years, it failed to give Dr. Ambedkar due recognition. "The
Congress reduced Dr. Ambedkar’s identity to that of a Dalit leader, neglecting
his broader contributions to the social and political development of the
nation," he said.
He
added that since the 1990s, the BJP has consistently upheld and promoted Dr.
Ambedkar's vision, working towards the welfare of all sections of
society—including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and women.
Tanwar
also emphasized that the BJP-led government has only introduced constitutional
amendments that aim to benefit the masses. The most recent example is the 33%
reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies as Dr. Ambedkar
believed that the development of women is a key parameter to measure a nation’s
progress, he noted.
The
'Samman Abhiyan' is being observed nationwide from April 13 to April 25. As
part of the campaign, the BJP is spreading awareness about Dr. Ambedkar’s
vision and the Constitution at the grassroots level.
We
are hopeful that through this initiative, people across the country will
recognize Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions beyond the narrow narrative previously
set by the Congress, Tanwar said.
Earlier
in the program, BJP Sikkim spokesperson Passang Sherpa and GMC executive councillor
Bidhya Cintury also addressed the gathering.
