GANGTOK,: Sweta Gautam, an educationist known for her keen interest in foundational pedagogy, unveiled her children’s book ‘Buku and the Birds’ on Friday here.

Sweta serves as a primary teacher at Middle Gyalshing Secondary School in West Sikkim.

This remarkable book shines a spotlight on her ancestral hometown, Omchung in Gyalshing, capturing the region’s natural beauty and the vibrant birdlife that inhabits it.

At the heart of the story is a young village child, who explores the world through the lens of play with a rare indigenous toy called the ‘pipe gadi’. As she rides this endangered toy, the child’s imagination soars with the cool breeze on her face, encountering the local birds and immersing herself in the enchantment of her surroundings, a press release informs.

Sweta aspires to make her mark as a children’s author, using her stories to rekindle appreciation for forgotten traditions and to inspire young minds. Through ‘Buku and the Birds’, she aims to introduce readers to the charm of the small village of Omchung, familiarize children with the English names of its vibrant bird species, and revive the long-lost indigenous toys that foster creativity and critical thinking in young learners, the release mentions.
