NAMCHI, :
Chief Minister P.S. Golay today attended the closing ceremony of the centennial
celebration of Sumbuk senior secondary school in Namchi district.
The
Chief Minister’s spouse, Krishna Rai, area MLA Farwanti Tamang, chairpersons
and advisors of various departments, Namchi zilla adakshya, Namchi DC and
officials were present at the event.
Organising
committee president G.P. Sharma highlighted that the school was started on
January 22, 1923 as a government aided school. From 1956, it functioned as a government primary school for 18 years before
it was upgraded to junior high level in 1974, to secondary school in 1989 and
then to senior secondary level in 2014.
Principal
Indu Gyaltsen Gurung presented the annual school report, highlighting the scholastic
and non-scholastic activities of the school, and the challenges.
She
appraised the Chief Minister about the long pending demand of initiation of
science and commerce streams for senior classes of the school. Among other
demands include renaming of the school after its founder and land donor Late Hari
Prasad Pradhan, naming of the school blocks after three land donors and infrastructural
development.
The
Chief Minister, in his address, congratulated the organising
committee, school faculty and former and present students on the completion of
the glorious 100 years. He commended the founder of the school, Late Hari
Pradhan, his family and others for their devotion and commitment in shaping the
future of many people through the establishment of this educational institute
in the region. He further acknowledged the contribution and education services
made by the school towards society and shaping the individuals who served in
various capacities in the State government.
Reminiscing his old school days, the Chief Minister
also shared his experience as a student in which he advised the students to
become disciplined and obedient which, he said, are important values to
inculcate in order to become a successful person in life. He also shared how
the National Education Policy, 2022 entails students to become more
accountable, helping them to become successful in their academics as well
as in their future careers. Further, he spoke about various educational
opportunities and benefits provided under the State government initiatives of
APATAN, Nar Bahadur Fellowship Scheme, Chief Minister’s Internship
Scheme, Bahini and many other schemes aimed at supporting the students.
Responding to the demands of the school committee,
the Chief Minister announced that the school will avail science and commerce
streams for students from next academic year, the catch water drainage system
will be installed and additional lavatories will be constructed. In addition,
funds for up gradation and retrofitting of the school building will be
considered and released next year, he added.
He also made some announcements for Melli
constituency. He said that Druk International University at Turuk and Gurukul
University at Sadam Suntaley will be set up to benefit the students and locals.
Similarly, Sikkim Medical Science University will be established in Namchi, he
added.
Further, he said that the State government will
assist in establishment of frozen chicken plant for poultry growers at Sadam,
and Melli Payong junior high school will be upgraded to secondary school next
year.
The
Chief Minister also unveiled the “centenary pillar” and inaugurated school
auditorium on the occasion.
School
founder Late Hari Prasad Pradhan was felicitated posthumously along with land
donors, former school heads, founder of school management committee, and special
and academic achievers of the school.
