CM inaugurates DPS-Gangtok at Lumsey

GANGTOK,: Chief Minister P.S. Golay today inaugurated Delhi Public School-Gangtok here at Lumsey, Tadong.

The inaugural function was also attended by Education minister Raju Basnet and Health minister G.T. Dhungel as the guests of honour along with DPS Board of Management member Praveen Shrivastava, DPS-Gangtok vice chairperson Sandip Killa, DPS-Gangtok trustee member Kanishk Killa, deputy mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia, Education ACS R. Telang and School Education secretary Tashi Chophel.

The Chief Minister congratulated the DPS management and DPS-Gangtok for completing the construction of the school in a time bound manner and initiating classes from the upcoming academic year itself.

He said, “Our government has prioritized education and health. During the SKM party's first term we had carried out numerous activities, framed policies and programs for the fostering of these sectors. In the field of education, our government had upgraded numerous government schools, built colleges, schools, extended scholarships to the meritorious students under CMMSS, MBBS and others. We, in our first term, had initiated few policies in the education sector which has started to show results. Prior to this year, the students from private schools used to crack entrance examinations for MBBS, engineering and others.  They used to avail the State quota, scholarship for higher education within and outside State in reputed institutions, but this year the students from government schools are the one that have topped the entrance and availed the seats in MBBS and others. There are many more policies to be framed following the new education policy for the holistic development of education in the State.”

He further added that the government is also planning to frame a policy for the teachers of the State government schools. “We have decided to provide not just the best salaries but also allowances. The allowances that we plan to extend will be exclusively for teachers serving as teachers, those on deputation to other departments will be barred from availing the allowances,” added CM Golay.

“Similarly, our government from coming session has decided to start a model school at Assam Lingzey under Namcheybung constituency where the meritorius students selected under CMMSS would avail quality education from 6th standard onwards and the teaching faculty of the school will be selected from the existing teachers of the State who would be provided with 25% extra allowances for teaching in the said school. The teachers will undergo selection criteria and 50% of the students in the said school will be sponsored like the CMMSS students and remaining students will have to pay fees like any other normal private schools.”

He requested the DPS Gangtok to maintain its reputation and brand value in Gangtok as in Delhi. He added that the education imparted must be value based wherein the students of the school is competent enough to compete at the global level rather than just limiting their target to acquiring government job.

Earlier, the inaugural function was also addressed by Health minister and area MLA G.T. Dhungel, Raju Basnet, Praveen Shrivastava, DPS-Gangtok head mistress Dolly Rai Pandey and Kanishk Killa.
