GANGTOK,: Dayspring Dental Clinic in Tadong has recently inaugurated the upgraded version of the dental Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan machine.

CBCT is a painless, quick, and 3D X-ray imaging technique that creates images of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding areas.

In an exclusive interview with SIKKIM EXPRESS, dental surgeon and Dayspring Dental Clinic proprietor Dr. Sujata Mukhia informed that the upgraded CBCT machine is the first of its kind in Sikkim. Previously, patients had to travel to Siliguri for the scan.

“Dental CBCT scans create 3D images of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding areas. A cone-shaped X-ray beam rotates around the patient to capture data. It is safer than a typical CT scan because it uses less radiation and is used to diagnose and plan treatment for dental, oral, and maxillofacial issues. The scan is painless and takes less than a minute. It is beneficial and easier for both doctors and patients,” explained Dr. Sujata.

With over 14 years of experience, Dr. Sujata completed her Bachelor of Dental Studies in Patna and pursued further studies in Mumbai. In 2011, she started her professional career as a dental surgeon in Siliguri. After two years, she returned to Sikkim and volunteered at STNM Hospital. A decade ago, she established her private clinic, Dayspring Dental Clinic.

She shared her decision to establish a private practice, breaking the stereotypical mindset of pursuing only government jobs.

Despite facing many hardships in the initial days, Dr. Sujata now also trains young dental surgeons in her clinic. “I feel fortunate to be a private practitioner, and I am extremely happy,” she said.

“When I started my professional career, people in Sikkim were less aware of dental hygiene. Today, perhaps due to social media, people are much more aware. Oral hygiene is vital for our general health, and we should not neglect our teeth. Ideally, one should visit a dentist once every six months. Dental cavities are very common in Sikkim, especially as people here chew tobacco and churpi, among other things. Implants are also becoming popular, but since they are expensive, not everyone can afford them. Over time, however, implants may become more affordable,” she informed.

Dayspring Dental Clinic conducts a variety of dental treatments, surgeries, and cosmetic dental procedures, excluding cases related to cancer patients. With advancements in technology, the clinic ensures it stays up-to-date with new equipment. All materials and equipment used are imported.
