GANGTOK, : The Gangtok Municipal Corporation, in
collaboration with Health and Urban Development departments, has initiated a
‘Khau Galli’ street food project to promote hygienic and diverse street food
culture in the capital. The initiative, following the concept of the Government
of India, aims to attract tourists and locals alike to indulge in safe and
flavourful culinary experiences.
GMC Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri and
Deputy Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia laid the foundation stone for the
establishment of food stalls at Namnang walkway today in the presence of ward
councillor Pema Lhamu Lamtha and other GMC councillors, NHM mission director
Dr. Anusha Lama, GMC commissioner R.B. Bhandari and chief town planners Dinkar
Gurung and Gary Chopel from Urban Development department and GMC respectively.
The project, funded by National Health
Mission under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, aims to elevate the
standard of street food hygiene and safety.
Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri expressed his
delight at the initiative, emphasizing the importance of promoting local
cuisines and traditional foods prepared using organic raw materials. He
informed that the stalls, initially totalling nine, will be allocated to
progressive Self Help Groups (SHGs) to showcase the State’s rich culinary
heritage.
Namnang walkway was chosen for its prime
accessibility from NH10 and MG Marg. The development works for ‘Khau Galli’ are
set to commence from February 13. GMC assistant town planner Jimila Shenga
presented the detailed project report during the ceremony.
The ceremony also had the presence of
officials from Power and PHE departments along with local gentries.
