GANGTOK,: Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) has started the long-awaited refurbishment of the back drainage at MG Marg, Gangtok. The project involves implementation of a modern drainage system, incorporating an improved service line network alongside rainwater harvesting and related facilities.

Speaking to SIKKIM EXPRESS, GMC deputy Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia said, “Overflow of drain water during monsoon seasons has plagued MG Marg, causing damage to property and goods for years. The damages were reported by the business operators and stakeholders for many years, but the government then paid no heed to the cry of the citizens. The GMC took stock of the back drainage, held several rounds of meetings with the stakeholders, victims and then met the Chief Minister.”

Acknowledging the severity of the issue, the Deputy Mayor said, the Chief Minister directed the GMC to prioritize and ensure a high-quality and comprehensive solution. She expressed gratitude on behalf of GMC and MG Marg residents for the government's attention to the matter.

The project, prepared by GMC's Architectural and Engineering Wing, faced initial delays due to logistical challenges exacerbated by October 4 flash floods.

Councillor Sundeep Malu outlined the project's phased approach, covering key sections of MG Marg's hillside.

Phase 1 focuses on the stretch from Maharaja Sweet to the control room opposite the Tourist Information Centre, while Phase 2 extends to the New Market area until Pantaloons.

The initiative is expected to bring relief to residents, stakeholders and business operators, mitigating concerns of water damage and enhancing overall infrastructure resilience.
