Govt medical doctors’ retirement age extended by 4 years, private practice prohibited

GANGTOK,: State government medical doctors and specialists are now prohibited from carrying out their private practice by the Sikkim government.

“Medical doctors under General Duty and Public Health Wing and Specialist Cadre of Sikkim Health Service shall be prohibited from carrying out private practices,” reads a notification issued by the Department of Personnel (DoP) on September 13.

In another DoP notification, the State government has extended the retirement age of government medical doctors by four years.

This is subject to annual assessment and appraisal of performance of doctors on completion of 58 years of age based on measurable performance indicators during the preceding five years by a committee.

The State government has also constituted a committee for this purpose. It is headed by the chief secretary as its chairman with secretaries of Home, DoP and Health, STNM Hospital medical superintendent and CMO of the concerned hospital as members. The Health principal director is the member secretary.

The committee, notified on September 13, is tasked to assess the performance of the medical doctors at least one month before he/she attains the age of 58 years and submit appropriate recommendation on suitability of the concerned medical doctor for extension of service beyond 58 years.

The committee would also annually assess the performance of the medical doctors whose service has been extended beyond 58 years. In case, the committee is not satisfied with the doctor’s performance, it would not recommend for service extension of the concerned doctor.

The Health department was directed to identify and prepare the measurable indicators to assess the performance of medical doctors by the committee.
