DARJEELING,: Doctors of Darjeeling District Hospital held a one-hour strike on
Tuesday as part of the nation-wide protests demanding justice for the gruesome
rape and murder of a woman Post Graduate Trainee (PGT) doctor recently at
Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
The
August 9 rape and murder of the trainee doctor has sparked widespread outrage
with doctors and nurses leading protests in Kolkata and other parts of India.
“We
condemn the incident that took place at RG Kar Medical College where a PGT
second year student was brutally raped and murdered. She was on duty for
thirty-six hours and when she was on her way to take a rest, the incident took
place. According to the autopsy result, many people were involved in this. One
person has been arrested and we do not believe that this was the doing of only
one person,” said Dr. Shika Ganguly, a doctor in Darjeeling District Hospital.
“We want
a safe working place for both working men and women doctors for which we are
today observing a two-hour strike in different places in the country. Here we
have only held a one-hour strike as this being a hilly region people have to
come here from faraway places for a check-up,” she said.
Emergency
medical duty was kept out of the purview of the strike.
“If we
have to work in such an environment of fear then we cannot provide treatment.
We have held this protest program for only today as the Bengal CM has already
given out a statement that if until Sunday the police cannot arrest the
culprits then the case will be handed over to the CBI. It is not only the
doctors but these types of incidents occur with other people as well,” said
Ganguly.
IMA Sikkim unit also condemns
The
Sikkim unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) said the heinous rape and
murder of the doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital has
shaken the entire medical fraternity in the country. The Indian Medical
Association, Sikkim State branch offers our sincere condolences to the family
of the young doctor and stand in solitude with the fraternity during these
rough times, said the IMA Sikkim chapter on Tuesday.
“The
Sikkim State Branch of IMA stands with the West Bengal IMA and IMA headquarters
and condemns the incident. We hope that incidents like this don’t ever have to
see the light of the day again anywhere. We sincerely hope that law punishes
them to the maximum extent possible and support the action to fast track the
case and justice to be delivered to us,” said the IMA Sikkim unit.
