Inviting globally renowned Ed Sheeran brings international visibility to Sikkim: GM Gurung

GANGTOK,: Politician and tourism entrepreneur GM Gurung has welcomed the State government’s plans for an Ed Sheeran concert in Sikkim during the 50th Statehood Day celebrations.

In a press statement, Gurung says the objections coming from opposition parties regarding the proposed event are neither logical nor appropriate. He maintained that the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s Statehood is a momentous occasion which deserves to be celebrated on a national and global scale.

“Inviting a globally renowned artist like Ed Sheeran not only enhances the celebration but also brings international visibility and recognition to Sikkim. This, in turn, will undoubtedly benefit the State's tourism industry as the increased visibility will draw the attention of a global audience to Sikkim,” said Gurung.

Gurung mentioned that tourism is a primary source of income for Sikkim, and it is crucial to continue promoting the State to attract world-class tourists and investors.

“It is therefore unwise and counterproductive for anyone to oppose the efforts of the Sikkim government to bring renowned personalities—both domestic and international—into the State for such events. We must focus on promoting Sikkim's cultural and economic potential, rather than engaging in political opposition,” he said.

Gurung highlighted that the tourism sector has suffered a significant blow due to Covid pandemic of two years and last year’s floods, and tourism stakeholders including him are painfully aware of it.

“Revitalizing tourism is essential for the State’s recovery and growth. Across various sectors—business, politics, and even religious organizations—there is a shared recognition of the need to support tourism initiatives. Therefore, I wholeheartedly welcome and support the Sikkim government’s efforts to bring world-renowned personalities to Sikkim. This initiative is in the best interest of both the State and the nation and will contribute to the long-term prosperity of Sikkim,” said Gurung, expressing his gratitude to Chief Minister PS Golay for this visionary initiative.
