Odd-even traffic proposed in Gangtok to ease road congestion

GANGTOK,: The State government is proposing to introduce odd-even traffic movement for government and private vehicles along the NH 10 in Gangtok city to ease out traffic load and congestion. The restriction is proposed from Mayfair Fatak till GICI, Zero Point along the NH 10 in Gangtok municipal area.

Taxi vehicles have been exempted from the proposed odd-even system. It is not ascertained when the odd-even restriction would be imposed.

As per the proposed system, government vehicles from the level of additional secretary and above would be exempted from the odd-even restriction. Their vehicles are to be provided with red exemption stickers by the Home department.

The Home department has also asked all departments to provide details of officers from the level of joint secretary and below who require exemption along with valid justification. Their cases would be evaluated by the higher authorities.

Meanwhile, the Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim has objected to the proposed odd-even traffic system in Gangtok saying that it shows that the government has failed to address the tragic congestion issue.

The CAP Sikkim maintained that the State government should have established more parking lots, taxi stands and alternative routes to decongest Gangtok traffic with long-term planning. The odd-even rule will adversely affect the vehicle owners, drivers and the common people, the party said.
