GANGTOK,: The Sikkim government has declared a seven-day State mourning
period as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who passed
away on Thursday night.
In a
notification, the State government expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the
former Prime Minister.
As a mark
of respect, a seven-day State mourning will be observed throughout Sikkim from
December 26 to January 1, 2025. During the mourning period, the national flag
will be flown at half-mast throughout the State and there will be no official
entertainment, it was notified.
Former
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had passed away at AIIMS, New Delhi at an age of
92. He was being treated for age related
medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26.
He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
Dr. Singh,
who served as country’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was known for his
transformative role in steering India’s economy through a period of significant
liberalisation.
His tenure
is often credited for initiating major economic reforms in 1991 when he was the
finance minister, which helped modernise India's economy and integrate it into
the global market.
Sikkim
Governor Om Prakash Mathur expressed his profound grief on the passing away of
former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
“He was a
visionary economist and statesman whose humble leadership and integrity shaped
the nation’s journey on the global stage. His contributions to India's economic
growth, democratic values, and commitment to peace will be remembered as an
enduring legacy,” said the Governor in his condolence message.
A man of
humility and intellect, Manmohan Singh was a respected figure both in India and
globally. Under his leadership, India saw consistent economic growth, reducing
poverty and strengthening the country’s position on the world stage. His
government was also known for implementing crucial legislations in areas such
as education, food security, and information.
Chief
Minister PS Golay also mourned the passing away of the former Prime Minister.
“His
contributions to economic reforms and public service remain unparalleled.
Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in
peace,” said the Chief Minister in his condolence message.
Singh as the
Prime Minister had visited Sikkim on September 29, 2011 after a 6.9 magnitude
earthquake had struck the State on September 18, 2011. He announced a Rs 1,000
crore relief package for the earthquake-hit State.
Former
Chief Minister Pawan Chamling also recorded his sadness on the demise of
Manmohan Singh.
“I am
deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh.
I had the privilege of working with him during his tenure as Prime Minister. He
was an exceptional individual—straightforward, with a clean and clear mind, and
a deeply compassionate heart. I will
always remember him as a leader of extraordinary intellect, integrity, and
compassion. Though he spoke little, his work powerfully reflected his
unwavering commitment to the progress of the nation,” said Chamling in his
condolence message.
Chamling
recalled that the former Prime Minister always encouraged him in his work and
appreciated his efforts.
“I
consider myself fortunate to have worked with a Prime Minister like Dr.
Manmohan Singh. Leaders of his caliber and integrity are rare, and his loss is
a profound one for India. Today, we mourn not just a statesman but a remarkable
human being whose legacy of humility, service, and nation-building will forever
be etched in our hearts. It will indeed be difficult for our country to see
another leader like him. Today is a day of great loss for India,” said
Chamling.
The Sikkim
Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) has also mourned the demise of former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh.
In his
condolence message, SPCC president Gopal Chettri remembered Manmohan Singh as
the architect of the economic liberalization of 1991 which ushered in an era of
growth and development that elevated India’s global standing.
“In Sikkim,
we fondly remember Dr. Singh’s personal intervention and compassion during the
devastating earthquake of 18th September 2011. His swift action and unwavering
support were instrumental in providing relief and rehabilitation to the
affected communities. His empathy and concern for the people of Sikkim left an
indelible mark on our hearts,” said the SPCC president.
Similarly,
the Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim has expressed its heartfelt condolences
on the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
“Dr.
Manmohan Singh’s leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the progress
of India will forever be remembered. His personal intervention during the
devastating earthquake in Sikkim on 18th September 2011 is etched in the hearts
of every Sikkimese. His swift and compassionate response during our time of
need provided immense solace and support to the affected communities, and for this,
we are eternally grateful,” said the CAP Sikkim in its condolence message.
