Sikkim pooled with heavyweights in Senior Women’s National Football Championships

GANGTOK,: The Sikkim women’s football team on Saturday left for Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh to play the final round of the 29th Senior Women’s National Football Championship for Rajmata Jijabai Trophy 2024-25.

Sikkim has been placed in a tough group which features traditionally strong teams – Haryana, West Bengal, Punjab and Railways. They start their campaign against Railways on December 11.

The Sikkim team was given a warm flag-off by Sikkim Football Association (SFA) general secretary Phurba Sherpa, vice president Chewang Thendup Sangderpa, joint secretary Samten Lhamu Lachungpa and joint secretary Paden Lama. The SFA executives interacted with the players and officials, and presented the State jerseys and travel kits, a press release informs.

The SFA executives extended their best wishes and encouraged the Sikkim team to perform their best in the tournament.

Head coach Puspha Gurung is leading the Sikkim women’s team. She is accompanied by assistant coach Alpan Lepcha, manager Sujana Rai and physiotherapist Dr Yachna Basnett, the release informs.

Sikkim had qualified for the senior women’s national football championship in a strong manner from the regional qualifiers held at Agartala, Tripura in October. Sikkim finished with an all-win record in the four-team group scoring 17 goals to top its group.

Simran Gurung was the star player in the group round by scoring nine goals in three games.
