GANGTOK,: The 2024 Sikkim State Basketball League (SSBL) culminated in a spectacular
finale on November 30 at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. The event celebrated the
finest basketball talent in the State, captivating an enthusiastic crowd and
fostering a vibrant sense of community.
Chief guest for
the occasion, M.T. Sherpa, secretary of the Sports and Youth Affairs department,
lauded the participants for their stellar performances.
The league
featured 16 men's teams, with eight advancing to the playoffs. The final match
saw the Ravens face off against the Yetis, delivering an electrifying showdown.
Demonstrating outstanding skill and teamwork, the Ravens emerged victorious,
claiming the championship title. Despite their valiant efforts, the Yetis fell
short in the decisive game. Pallor Rilon Wangdi of the Ravens was named the
Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match for his exceptional contribution.
In the women’s
tournament, eight teams competed, culminating in a gripping final between the
Mavericks and the Clusters. The Mavericks secured a hard-fought victory,
showcasing strategic play and resilience. Their triumph highlighted the growing
prominence of women’s basketball in the region.
Norchenla
Dolkar Namka of the Mavericks was awarded the MVP of the women’s tournament for
her remarkable performance.
Addressing the
gathering, the chief guest commended the players for their dedication and
skill, emphasizing the league's role in nurturing local talent and promoting
sportsmanship.
Beyond the
thrilling on-court action, the SSBL 2024 also emphasized community engagement.
The league organized basketball clinics and workshops for aspiring players,
underlining its commitment to fostering grassroots development and broadening
the sport’s appeal.
As the season
wraps up, the Basketball Association of Sikkim (BAS) has expressed its intent
to build on this year’s success. Plans are already in motion for the next
season, focusing on enhancing player development programs, increasing community
involvement, and elevating the standard of basketball in the State.
