16th State Athletics Meet :Gangtok district emerges overall champions

GANGTOK, :Gangtok district emerged as the overall champions at the 16th State Athletics Meet 2025 organized by Sikkim Athletic Association (SAA) at Khel Gaon, Reshithang. The second-place spot was claimed by Namchi district, followed by Gyalshing, Soreng, Pakyong and Mangan districts, in that order.

Speaking to media, SAA general secretary Rajiv Roka expressed his satisfaction with the event, which saw the participation of over 300 athletes from all six districts of the State. He informed that the athletes had undergone rigorous district-level selection processes before advancing to the State-level meet.

“The competition was intense, with athletes fiercely competing to bring the trophy to their respective districts,” said Roka. Headed that numerous promising athletes have been identified at the meet for further training.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Chief Minister for his gracious support and assistance in making the event a success as well as to the department of Sports and Youth Affairs. A special thanks also goes to Sun Pharma and all the well-wishers for their contributions,” said Roka. He further acknowledged the efforts of coaches, teachers, district associations and SAA executive members for their hard work in organizing a successful event.

Roka also informed that SAA would soon hold an executive meeting to develop a year-long athletics calendar for the State, aimed at helping athletes prepare for upcoming events. Additionally, he shared that the next State-level meet would invite athletes from other States in an open category to foster healthy competition and learning.

Appreciating the support from Athletics Federation of India, Roka thanked the TSR (Timing, Scoring and Record) team sent by the IAF. The TSR technology was also praised by Tseten Bhutia, joint secretary of Gangtok District Athletic Association. Bhutia emphasized the importance of adopting modern technology in sports to enhance athletes' understanding of their potential and areas for improvement. The use of TSR not only brought transparency to the events but also allowed athletes to track their progress more effectively.

The 16th State Athletics Meet featured over 100 track and field events.
