SORENG, (IPR): The ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestones by Inspiring Women
Through Action) City League Badminton Tournament was officially inaugurated
today at the Khelo India Centre, Indoor Gymnasium Hall, Jautar Stadium.
Organised
by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, under the
directive of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, the
event celebrates women's empowerment through sports.
The
chief guest, DR Bista (ADC-I, Soreng), addressed the gathering, emphasizing
ASMITA's vision. He encouraged the athletes to pursue excellence and aspire to
represent India in major platforms such as the Commonwealth and Asian Games. He
also lauded the initiative and extended his best wishes to all participants.
Mamita Gurung,
deputy director (Sports and Youth Affairs department, Soreng District),
delivered the welcome speech, elaborating on ASMITA’s goals. She highlighted
its mission to promote women's participation in sports, increase their
representation on competitive stages, and provide exposure to higher-level
tournaments.
The
event had the presence of Deena Subba (Panchayat President and Guest of
Honour), Lobzang Tamang (president, Soreng District Olympic Association),
Tsheten Tashi Lepcha (DFO-T), and Navraj Sharma (Executive Member), alongside
officers from the Sports department, representatives, and team managers from
various badminton associations.
A
total of 16 teams from the Soreng and Gyalshing District Badminton Associations
participated in the tournament, showcasing a collaborative effort to promote
badminton across the region.
