GANGTOK,:
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Sikkim Centre organised a field
day for 'Sikkim Dhan-1' paddy variety on November 20 at Sumbuk, South Sikkim.
The initiative was supported by AICRP on Seed (Crops).
Dr.
Ramgopal Devadas, HoRC and principal scientist at ICAR, Sikkim Centre,
inaugurated the event at the paddy fields of Durga Prasad Pradhan, Amber
Bahadur Rai, Bhima Rai and Chandra Kumar Rai, informs a press release.
The
field day aimed to evaluate the performance and efficiency of 'Sikkim Dhan-1'
paddy variety in farmers' fields, demonstrating its productivity (estimated
6-6.5 t/ha) under Sikkim's organic conditions.
Dr.
Devadas discussed various ICAR-benefiting Central schemes for farmers including
poultry (PSP), Integrated Organic Farming System (IOFS) models and awards for
farmers' varieties. He also exchanged feedback on growing 'Sikkim Dhan-1'
collectively and emphasised farmer preferences.
Aon
the occasion, ICAR distributed 100 kgs of Khufri Sinduri, an ICAR-developed
potato variety, to farmers in Sumbuk.
Around
25 farmers participated in the field day and engaged in conversations and
interactions with ICAR experts during on-field session. The discussions also
covered the cultivation of traditional local varieties such as Bhimpal and Lal
Jhapaka paddy, Seto Makkai, Chalani chilli, Junelo Sorghum and local poultry
breed Dumsi Kukra.
The
event was well-received by the farmers, who appreciated the opportunity to
learn about new agricultural practices and share their experiences. ICAR
officials noted the importance of such events in promoting sustainable
agriculture and strengthening the adoption of innovative farming techniques.
The field day also set the stage for future evaluation trials and the continued
development of region-specific agricultural practices, the release adds.
