GANGTOK,: State BJP on Friday vowed to take strict disciplinary action against certain party functionaries who engaged in anti-party activities during the recently concluded Sikkim Assembly and Parliamentary Elections 2024.

“Certain party workers holding posts in the party including sitting MLAs and senior functionaries were doing anti-party activities during the election. We have received reports and evidence of such anti-party activities by them. They betrayed the trust and responsibilities given to them by the party by campaigning against the BJP candidates and giving statements against the party. The party will take strong disciplinary action against them,” said State BJP spokesperson Passang Sherpa at a press meet here.

Passang informed that reports of such anti-party activities were submitted during the post-poll review meeting of the State BJP. We are submitting the report to the Central party leadership and action would be taken against them before June 2, the day of counting of votes, he said.

The State BJP had contested in 31 Assembly seats and the lone Lok Sabha seat with State unit president DR Thapa and NK Subba the only two sitting MLAs from the party who are among the candidates. Three incumbent MLAs from the BJP resigned ahead of polls and contested as candidates of ruling SKM.

At the review meeting, the State BJP thanked the people of Sikkim for their support to the party candidates during the elections and expressed its satisfaction on the response received during the campaign across the State.

There were instances where the Model Code of Conduct was violated and the candidates could not fully reach out to the people, we will take strong steps on this in future, said party spokesperson DR Giri.

Adding to this, Passang said police cases have been registered against such incidents of poll-related violence including the alleged attack on State BJP unit president’s house here along Indira Bypass route.

“Investigations on these cases will not stop under any circumstances after the election’s result is announced on June 2. We have taken it seriously. People of Sikkim are apprehensive of post-poll violence, victimisation and losing their government benefits. We want to assure the people that the BJP will protect you from violence and victimisation and ensure that your rights and benefits are not snatched away,” said the State BJP spokesperson.

The press meet was also addressed by State BJYM in-charge Lalit Pokhrel.
