GANGTOK, : A total of 112 students were
awarded degrees at the first convocation of Medhavi Skills University (MSU),
Sikkim held at Chintan Bhawan on Friday.
Degrees and diplomas were
conferred upon students across diverse disciplines. It included students from
Diploma in Emergency Medical Technology, Diploma in Medical Laboratory
Technology, Diploma in Radiology and Imaging Technology, and Bachelor of
Business Administration – Retail Operations program.
Radhika Chettri (Diploma in
Emergency Medical Technology), Uma Kumari Sharma (Diploma in Medical Laboratory
Technology) and Bandhana Subba (Diploma in Radiology and Imaging Technology) received gold
medals for their academic achievements.
The convocation was attended by
State Education minister Raju Basnet as the chief guest and Prof. Mahendra P.
Lama, senior professor at JNU and Emeritus chief economic advisor to Government
of Sikkim, as the guest of honour.
Among others, Dr. Rajesh Pankaj,
director &head, Education & Skill, Federation of Indian Chambers of
Commerce and Industry; Dr. T. Pema Bhutia, DHS/ME, Government of Sikkim,
Justice (Retd.) A.P Subba- chairperson, Lokayukta, Sikkim; C.R Namchu, registrar,
Sikkim Nursing Council; Ramesh Dahal, registrar, State Allied and Healthcare
Council, were present as special guests.
The convocation was declared
open by MSU pro-chancellor Kuldip Sarma.
Minister Raju Basnet, in his
address, praised MSU for pioneering the skill-integrated higher education model,
stating, “In an era where industries evolve rapidly, institutions like MSU are
playing a transformative role in shaping the future workforce of India.”
Basent shared that the State
government, under the leadership of Chief Minister PS Golay, is committed to
make Sikkim an education hub.
“Unlike the former government,
which was focused on planting casinos and pharmaceutical companies in Sikkim,
the SKM government has been planting universities in different parts of Sikkim.
Students these days are fortunate to have such wonderful universities at the
comfort of your home. MSU has achieved its mileage, and has been providing
placements in different companies. Without placements, students will be lost,
and it would be incomplete,” said the minister.
Congratulating the graduating
students, Prof. Mahendra P. Lama encouraging graduates to embrace lifelong
learning and adaptability, stating, “Your education is the foundation of your
future. Use your knowledge not just for personal success, but to contribute
meaningfully to society.”
He warned that there will be
various challenges and roadblocks and that the future is not linear. “Be
prepared to face it, and your motherland will be proud of you.”
Prof. Lama expressed gratitude
towards guests, industry partners and stakeholders for their support to MSU’s
mission to create an ecosystem of excellence in education. He urged the
students to carry forward the knowledge, skills and the spirit of Medhavi.
In his convocation address, MSU founder
and chancellor Pravesh Dudani remarked, “Our goal is to produce graduates who
are not only employable but also capable of driving change in their industries.
Today, we celebrate the first step towards that vision.”
Co-founder and
pro-chancellor Kuldip Sarma stated, “MSU honours not just academic achievement,
but the unwavering spirit of our nation’s youth. At MSU, we have nurtured a
generation that is not just employable but capable of creating employment. Our
graduates are equipped with the skills, resilience, and patriotic fervour to
uplift industries, strengthen national development, and lead the country
towards self-reliance.”
MSU Sikkim vice-chancellor Dr.
Amiya Singh expressed that the 1st convocation ceremony of MSU marks a
significant milestone, where not only the achievements of the graduating
students were celebrated but also the collective vision and efforts that have
shaped the base of the institution towards promoting skill-integrated higher
education. He briefly highlighted the achievements of MSU.
“MSU was established in 2021,
with the vision to integrate industry-relevant skills in higher education
format, in order to bridge the gap between academic outcomes and industry
expectations, thereby ensuring that higher education is not just about
acquiring knowledge but about solving
problems, employability, job experience and life skills,” he said.
