NGT dismisses petition against West Point Mall

GANGTOK, : On Friday, a double bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) at the Kolkata Court dismissed the long-standing case concerning the West Point Mall in Gangtok.

The case, originally filed by Dr. Bina Basnet (Shanti) against the State government, had raised environmental and regulatory concerns over the construction of the fourteen-storied mall.

The online judgement was pronounced by Justice B Amit Sthalekar, Judicial Member, and Dr Arun Kumar Verma, expert member of NGT, Kolkata Court.

Dr. Basnet had challenged the State government’s approval of the project, citing potential adverse impacts on the local environment. However, the tribunal, after thorough review, ruled that the project meets the necessary guidelines and dismissed the petition.

The final judgment reads: “Upon a consideration of the facts of the case and the submissions of the learned Counsel for the parties, we find no merit in the present original Application and the same is accordingly dismissed.”

Also the sources informed that the IIT-Roorkee recently vetted the West Point Mall project, further affirming its compliance with engineering standards.
