GANGTOK, : The Old Silk Route in Dzuluk, East Sikkim has been awarded the
prestigious ‘Most Scenic Route in India’ award by India Today Tourism Survey
and Awards 2025.
This
recognition highlights the unmatched beauty of this historic route, known for
its mesmerizing landscapes, winding roads, and panoramic views of the Eastern
Himalayas, a Tourism department press release informs.
The
award was formally conferred during the India Today Travel awards ceremony held
on Friday in New Delhi. The event brought together leaders from the travel and
tourism industry to honour the finest destinations and experiences across the
country.
Union
Tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat presented the award to Sikkim Tourism
minister Tshering T. Bhutia who was accompanied by Tourism principal secretary
CS Rao to receive the award on behalf of the State.
The
Tourism minister expressed his happiness for the India Today recognition to the
fabled Old Silk Route.
Dzuluk,
a tourist hub perched at an altitude of 10,100 feet is part of the ancient Silk
Route, which once connected traders across Asia.
Today,
it stands as a popular high altitude tourist destination, offering spectacular
views of Mount Khangchendzonga and the iconic ZigZag Road, featuring 32 hairpin
bends that provide a thrilling experience to visitors.
“This
recognition reaffirms Sikkim’s status as a premier travel destination, celebrated
for its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and eco-tourism initiatives.
The Government of Sikkim remains committed to promoting sustainable tourism
while preserving the unique charm of this historic route,” said the Tourism
department.
