SIMFED chairman lauds OMAS for promoting local artistes and entrepreneurs

GANGTOK, : SIMFED chairman Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia was the chief guest for the Day 3 events of the ongoing 12th foundation day of Organisation of Musicians & Artistes of Sikkim (OMAS) here at MG Marg.

Sushma Gurung from Sushma Productions was the guest of honour in the event being held with the theme ‘Souvenirs of Sikkim’.

OMAS advisor Sonam Gyaltsen Bhutia shared about the event and OMAS which was followed by a soulful performance of ‘Jaha Bagcha Teesta Rangit’ song by

Kritika Sharma.

Serenya Palmo, a local entrepreneur and CEO of Palmo Handicrafts, expressed her gratitude to OMAS and Commerce and Industries department for providing a platform for local entrepreneurs through the ‘Souvenirs of Sikkim’. Her organization specializes in handcrafted, customized traditional wooden furniture, blending traditional hand-painted and hand-carved designs with modern elements to cater to diverse cultural needs.

Palmo encouraged young and aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, to pursue entrepreneurship as a means of livelihood and job creation. She further urged them to take advantage of government schemes, which were not available a decade ago but now offer vital financial support to those with entrepreneurial aspirations.

SIMFED chairman Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, in his address, congratulated OMAS for its 12th foundation day milestone. He commended OMAS for providing a significant platform that has empowered Sikkim’s entrepreneurs, craftsmen, musicians, and artists, giving them exposure and the confidence to succeed in their respective careers.

Bhutia stressed the importance of supporting this initiative, calling for society to uplift artists rather than exploit them. He assured the audience that the government is committed to supporting the artistic community and its causes. He also addressed the issue of youth diversion, particularly the rising concerns about drug abuse, and emphasized the role of artists in guiding youth towards positive paths.

The event concluded with a lively performance of the traditional Nepali Maruni dance by the students of ‘G Sharp School of Performing Arts’. The day also featured an open mic session, providing a platform for local singers to showcase their musical talents. People visiting MG Marg including tourists also took the opportunity to belt out some of their favourite songs.
